Les Miles says Pooka Williams plans to rejoin Kansas in January - 247Sports
MANHATTAN, Kan. — When Pooka Williams announced he was opting out of the rest of the 2020 college football season, citing a family health matter, many assumed his time at Kansas was coming to an end. After all Williams, a two-time first-team All-Big 12 honoree, will have the option to leave for the NFL Draft after the season if he so chooses.
That may very well end up being the case, but according to Kansas football's coach, Williams plans to rejoin the team in January. Speaking to media for the first time since news broke of Williams' departure, Les Miles was asked about the situation regarding the Jayhawks' star running back.
“When he left, he left to go support his mother, who is sick,” Miles said. “I think it’s a wise decision for him to do so. I think those minutes and times are something that he’ll look back on and not regret leaving the team to be with his mom. What he said is, in January, that he’s coming back. So it’ll be interesting to see. Certainly we’d love to have him.”

Of course, that comment leaves room for interpretation, including the idea that Williams could rejoin the team, go through a spring slate and then choose to leave for the NFL. Williams, of course, may also choose to go his own way in preparation for the NFL, whether that would be in Lawrence, back home in Louisiana or elsewhere. He could also choose to return to KU and play out next season or transfer.
At the time of his opt-out announcement, the Jayhawks were 0-4 on the season and 0-3 in Big 12 play. Kansas dropped to 0-5 with a 55-14 loss to Kansas State on Saturday. That marked the first game Williams has missed this season.
In his four games, Williams, who appeared hindered by an ankle injury, totaled 196 rushing yards on 51 carries, posting career-low marks of 49 rushing yards per game and 3.8 yards per carry. He recorded three total touchdowns, with one coming on special teams.

As a freshman, Williams rushed for 1,125 yards with 10 total touchdowns. As a sophomore, he rushed for 1,061 yards with five total touchdowns. If he does not play again for Kansas, he will have totaled 18 scores for his Kansas career, as well as 2,382 rushing yards and 534 passing yards.
Teammate Kwamie Lassiter said the team supports Williams' decision to step away and spend time with his family.
"Really it’s just next man up," Lassiter said. "Of course none of us wanted to see him go, but we understand why. … I respect what he’s doing. He’s taking care of his family."
The Jayhawks will next take the field on Oct. 31 against Iowa State. Kickoff at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium is slated for 11 a.m.
