New Delhi: Most of us know the health benefits of coffee, one of the world’s most popular beverages. Rich in antioxidants, coffee contains many essential nutrients that are beneficial to your health in many ways. Studies suggest that caffeine found in coffee can boost your metabolic rate and increase fat burning, which may aid weight loss. Now, a new study has linked drinking coffee to a longer life.   

The report published in the peer-reviewed medical journal JAMA Internal Medicine showed that people who drank two to three cups of coffee per day had about a 12 per cent lower risk of death compared to non-coffee drinkers. Furthermore, Spanish researchers reported last year that people who drank at least four cups of coffee a day had a 64 per cent lower risk of death than those who never drank coffee. “We found that people who drank two to three cups per day had about a 12 per cent lower risk of death compared to non-coffee drinkers,” said Erikka Loftfield, a researcher at the National Cancer Institute.

For the current study, the researchers examined half a million people who drank 1 to 8 cups of coffee a day. This population-based study, which includes people aged 38 to 73, draws an association between coffee and health. Also, one study, which looked at more than 200 previous studies and published last year in The British Medical Journal, claimed that drinking three to four cups of coffee a day can positively impact health more than cause harm. An editorial from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health said that there is no way to know if coffee prevents chronic disease and reduces mortality because there are too many factors to weigh like why people start drinking coffee and what kind of coffee drinks they're having.

The bottom line is an excess of anything can be harmful to your body and the mind. Research has shown that moderate coffee is not harmful to most people. So, use it in moderation to get the most out of your coffee drinking.
