The cure for post holiday blahs

Feeling the post holiday blahs? Holiday stress, high sugar foods, extra alcohol consumption and sedentary movie marathons can leave a person feeling sluggish and struggling to regain momentum, according to experts. Once the gifts have been opened and holiday celebrations have become fond memories, the dreaded holiday hangover can make it difficult to get started on New Year resolutions.

Experts say the best places to start recovering is to detox your body of excess sugar and toxins, to reduce the stress hormone, Cortisol, which is the culprit for increased cravings and belly fat storage, to get outside and soak up nature, which is a natural mood stabilizer and to break a sweat.

According to experts, sugar is eight times as addictive as cocaine. The good news is that it takes only 10 days to break the sugar addiction. In order to break the addiction, however, it must be done cold turkey. This means deciding on no processed sugars, prepackaged meals and going "no white" which eliminates white flour and white starches, such as potatoes and white rice, which are processed similar to sugar in the body. After 10 days, the palate is changed to enjoy lower sugar meals and the addiction cycle will be broken.

To curb cravings, dietitians recommend adding in lean protein sources such as lean white meat, fish, nuts or beans to all meals, and also to consume fat. You read right, fat is the human body's friend. Healthy fats such as olive oil, avocados, cheese and even dark chocolate help maintain a steady metabolism.
