How to lose weight and burn fat: The secret is in your kitchen

If how to lose weight is your biggest concern, then look no further than your own kitchen. While you may have cut out all carbs to follow keto and might be gulping down your protein shakes religiously, you’re still missing out on something. It’s a common fixure in the kitchen of every Indian household. It’s also a major ingredient in many of your favourite baked goodies. Remember that hint of spice in your single malt? That’s the flavour we’re talking about – cinnamon. Often overlooked by those chasing weight loss goals, research has shown that cinnamon might be great for regulating metabolism and burning fat. Read on to know how to lose weight with your spice of choice. This might be the tastiest method to weight loss.

Why cinnamon is good for weight loss

It’s almost ironic that cinnamon is an integral ingredient in all the foods that you shouldn’t be eating if you want to burn fat and get fit. However, it turns out that the spice may very well be what you need to shed some kilos. In fact, it’s the very essential oil that gives cinnamon it’s flavour – the organic compound called cinnamaldehyde – that will help you lose weight.

According to findings published on the University of Michigan News, scientists have tested the effect of cinnamaldehyde on mice and found that it appears to guard them against obesity and high blood sugar. To determine whether the same effects were seen in human beings, Research Assisstant Professor Jun Wu and a team from the University of Michigan Life Sciences Institute observed the effect of cinnamaldehyde on adipocytes (or fat cells) which store energy in the form of lipids. Adipocytes were collected from volunteers across a range of not only ages and ethnicites but also from a variety of different Body Mass Indexs. It was found that when these adipocytes interacted with cinnamaldehyde, they released enzymes that metabolised the lipids in the cell, thus effectively burning fat.

How to lose weight by eating cinnamon

For starters, it’s tasty. Wu believes that since it has been a part of the human diet for so long, coupled with the comfort our tastebuds have with the flavour, cinammon might be a great way to combat obesity. “It may offer an approach to metabolic health that is easier for patients to adhere to,” the researcher was quoted as saying. But, with the holiday season around the corner and Christmas treats lining the glass display at your local bakers’, it’s important to know just what kind of cinnamon to intake.

If you’re going to gorge to pastries, cinnamon buns and lattes spiced with your favourite flavour, that cinnamaldehyde isn’t going to work its magic. Quite the contrary, your adipocytes just might end up needing to make more space for all the fat that you’ll be adding to your body. Instead, try to incorporate cinnamon into your diet in healthier ways. For example, you could go with the age-old home remedy for weight loss: adding some cinnamon and honey to warm water and drinking it on an empty stomach first thing in the morning.

You could add a pinch of cinnamon to black tea – another superfood that’s proven to help burn fat and aid weight loss. You could even mix some cinnamon with your protein shake to make it tastier. But if you’re not fond of liquids early inn the morning, try sprinkling a bit of the spice on your oats or plain cornflakes. However, be sure you’re just adding milk and some bits of dry fruit to enhance the flavour of your breakfast because if you’re opting to add sugar, you’re not going to see the results that you want.

Other health benefits of cinammon

Now that you’ve figured out how to lose weight using this flavoursome spice, you’ll be happy to know that there are more benefits of adding cinnamon to your diet than just weight loss. Not only does it burn fat but it also prevets hyperglycemia, i.e., high blood sugar. Research has shown that patients suffering from Type 2 Diabetes who consumed between 1 to 6 grams of the spice daily for a period of 40 days exhibited 7 to 20 percent lower LDL cholestrol (or bad cholestrol). It also brought down total cholestrol by 12 to 26 percent. Due to high presence of type A polyphenols, cinnamon is also known for improving insulin sensetivity and regulating fasting glucose levels.

So when you re-evaluate your fitness goals for the new year, we’re sure this is going to be your favourite spice in 2018.
