Les Miles compares Kansas QB Jalon Daniels to Cam Newton - 247Sports

Les Miles is not afraid of setting the bar high when it comes to his Kansas football team.
On the wall of the team's meeting room, you're able to see the team's goals, which include competing for championships at the Big 12 and national levels. When he took the job at KU, Miles proclaimed his roster had more talent on it than when he took over at previous destinations.
So then, it probably shouldn't come as a surprise that Miles had an aggressive player comparison for his freshman starting quarterback when asked about him on Hawk Talk.

Speaking on the radio show, Miles spent much of the first few segments breaking down Jalon Daniels, who completed 19 of 33 passes for 159 yards in his start at Baylor to open Big 12 play. Daniels did not throw for any touchdowns or any interceptions, but he showcased the ability to get out of the pocket and run, while also unleashing a deep ball that just missed an open Andrew Parchment some 50-plus yards downfield.
Back to the radio show, Miles was asked if Daniels reminded him of any players he'd previously been around. The KU coach responded by naming one of the top SEC quarterbacks of the 2000s, if not ever, in Auburn great Cam Newton.

"The great mobile quarterback at Auburn when they won the national championship," Miles said. "He was a runner and a thrower. ... Cam Newton was a guy that went to junior college and had a much different direction and ends up really being a great leader for his team in college and chasing a national championship. I think it's a good observation and a good parallel."
Sure enough, Newton ended his career at Auburn, but he first went the JUCO route after a pair of unremarkable seasons with the Florida Gators. In 2010, with Auburn, he threw for 2,854 yards and 30 touchdowns while rushing for an additional 1,473 yards and 20 more touchdowns. He also caught two passes for 42 yards and another score, eclipsing the 50 total-touchdown mark for his final year.
Newton's season culminated with Heisman honors and a national title. He was selected first in the NFL Draft.
That being said, it would probably be a stretch to compare Newton — a five-star prospect and the No. 2-ranked dual-threat quarterback in his high school class — to Daniels — ranked as the No. 49 dual-threat passer and a three-star prospect — at any point in their careers. Perhaps the greater point, then, was that Miles sees Daniels having a bright future at the college level.
"He can be a very, very special quarterback," Miles said. "For him to continue to develop and be serious about it and walk through some time, he'll do everything we want him to do for us."
Finally, there's the question of the quarterback spot as a whole.
On Wednesday, Miles said the quarterback battle is "still kind of up in the air," echoing comments he made to reporters earlier in the week and after the Baylor game.
Daniels has been competing for snaps with senior Thomas MacVittie (shoulder injury) and junior Miles Kendrick thus far. MacVittie started the opener and switched off with Kendrick until an apparent shoulder injury ended MacVittie's day. Daniels, who played for one series in the opener, took all the snaps the following week.
"We know that Jalon Daniels is going to be there," Miles said. "And we've got to get two of these other guys healthy and then find out. One thing we've enjoyed is competition."
