Why play a game at 9 p.m.? KU football's Les Miles explains - 247Sports

KU football announced this past week, that the home opener against Coastal Carolina is going to kick off at 9 p.m CT on Sep. 12.

The game will also be played without fans, a measure taken due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Coach Les Miles sees this as an opportunity to be in a national spotlight despite some concerns about the start time of the game being late in the evening.

“Without fans in the stands, it’s the opportunity for our players’ families to see them play,” Miles said. “The late national time slot provides us some visibility.”

Miles did state some concerns he may have had but referred back to things he and his staff have done in past years regarding later kickoffs.

"Certainly, we were concerned about time slots and we are," Miles said. "We’re certainly gonna get some sleep before we play. I feel like we’ll be comfortable in our time slot. The things that we’ve done in the past have been to darken your room and make sure those shutters and blinds are closed.”

He continued.

“We make it cold in the room and sleep as long as you can," Miles added. "That’s kind of the thing that we’ve done in the past. Of course, we’ve traveled more from east to west so it may not be as significant.”

The late kickoff makes for an abnormal amount of free time prior to the game. Players shared their thoughts on the decision and its impact. The response from players who spoke on Wednesday was positive. Cornerback Kyle Mayberry saw the late kickoff as a benefit to himself.

“This 9 p.m game is probably the best thing to happen to me,” said the senior. “I like night games. I'm going to get to sleep in, so it’s not going to change much for me at all. I’m going to be wide awake at 9 p.m.”

Mayberry also mentioned the possibility of the staff changing the sleep schedule of players in order to be more prepared for Coastal Carolina.

Defensive lineman Sam Burt echoed the words of Mayberry in that he thought it was simply best to adjust with the circumstances.

“I never thought I’d play a game at 9 p.m., but it’s whatever,” said Burt. “I think for me personally and what we’ll try to do as a D-line unit is try to change our sleep schedules leading up to the game. I think that’s really all you can do is try to get as much sleep as you can and try to make the best of it.”
