Les Musiciens du Louvre: Mozart: Mass in C Minor — Romantic feeling - Financial Times

It is a sad coincidence that both the great choral works Mozart left us from the years of his maturity are unfinished. The Requiem has achieved huge popularity, despite being left only half written at his death, leaving the great torso of the Mass in C Minor rather in its shadow.

The earlier work deserves better, as the surviving score is closer to completion and all the music is Mozart out of the top drawer. Who could resist the heavenly beauty of the soprano solo “Et incarnatus est”, which is believed to have been sung at the first performance by his new wife, Constanze?

For this new recording Marc Minkowski uses the familiar 1985 edition by Salzburg-based Helmut Eder, which stays close to the surviving materials. Orchestration has been added wherever necessary to make a performance feasible, but there is no attempt to supply the missing sections of the Mass.

The most notable feature of this performance is its chamber-sized scale. Minkowski conducts his period-instrument Les Musiciens du Louvre with a chorus of just nine, plus his four soloists, making up in flexibility and emotional thrust what he surrenders in scale. Where others endow the opening "Kyrie" with a near-Baroque solemnity, Minkowski offers a stream of Romantic feeling.

Choral singing and orchestral playing are fine throughout. The only disappointment is that the two female soloists, Ana Maria Labin and Ambroisine Bré, decent though they are, do not match the best of their forebears on disc. The most angelic singing in "Et incarnatus est" is to be found elsewhere.
