During the festive season it can be easy to overindulge in fatty foods. You may want to squeeze into an amazing party dress, or just want to loose a bit of weight.
The military diet is one of the most popular ways to lose weight quickly. Supporters of the low-calorie diet claim that it can help you lose up to 10lbs in a week.
What is the military diet?
The military diet, also called the three-day diet, the navy diet or army diet, is a plan that can help you lose up to 10lbs in a week.
By severely restricting your calorie intake over a short period, you will be losing a combination of water and fat mass.
It is claimed by proponents of the diet that it was designed by nutritionists in the US military to get soldiers into shape.
However, there is no evidence that the diet is affiliated with any military institution. One of the big advantages of the military diet is that it will cost you no extra money.
You do not have to invest in specific, expensive low-calorie meals and ingredients.
How does it help you lose weight?
The military diet limits your calorie intake. Restricting your calorie intake will lead to a calorie deficit in your body.
This means your body will make up for it by using stored fat as fuel. The diet also includes intermittent fasting, which is beneficial for weight loss.
Eating high protein and high finer foods will increase your metabolism, causing you to burn fat.
How does the military diet work?
During a seven day period there are two different phases. For the first three days you have to follow a specific low-calorie meal plan for your main meals.
You strictly cannot eat snacks between meals. Calorie intake for these three days is supposed to be between 1,100-1,400 per day.
For the remaining days you should try to keep the calorie intake down.
What should you eat and what should you avoid on the military diet?
Do eat:
- Grapefruit, apples and bananas
- Whole wheat toast and saltine crackers
- Canned tuna
- Meat and eggs (including processed meat)
- Cottage cheese and hard cheddar cheese
- Green beans, broccoli, carrots
- Peanut butter
- Vanilla ice cream
- Black coffee or tea
- Water
Do not eat:
- Any additional fruits apart from what is mentioned above

- Any type of added fat
- Sugar – Any sweeteners containing calories
- Condiments
