Got the After Holiday Blues? Join a Grief Support Group - Grief is the normal natural response to the loss of someone or something important. It is unique to the individual, experiencing it, and there is no general timetable for completing it. We experience many types of loss in our lives, everything from divorce and the loss of individual abilities to loss of a person, and the longer we live, the more likely we are to have those losses. Although grief is as individual as each of us, it can be helpful to share the journey with others who are also grieving. Join a support group that offers an opportunity to learn coping skills and techniques in a supportive environment. Amy Weatherup, MSW, who has worked with the senior population for 25 years, is the facilitator on the first Wednesday of each month 10 - 11:30 a.m. Please call 704-662-3337 if you plan to attend.

Body Fat Burn - As you age, it gets hard to maintain a lean body and really tough to burn away body fat. Two key factors involved are what you put into your body (as the old saying goes, you are what you eat) and the extent of exercising you do to burn away body fat. Some fats in moderation are actually good for you, such as those found in nuts and olive oil. Unfortunately, eating too much fat, especially bad fats, with a lack of exercise, ends up as the spare tire syndrome around your waistline or as a beachball belly. If you need help burning away your body fat, come join the Body Fat Burn Workout every Wednesday 9 - 10 a.m. at South Iredell Senior Center. It’s a great step to improved health and a better waistline. The class is free and focuses on a cardiovascular workout.

Mah Jongg - It’s not just a game! Mah Jongg is definitely a social outing where laughs and commiserations are shared. In part, it’s the camaraderie, but there is something else, something unexplainable about the game that bonds people. Some have summed up this version of the centuries-old Chinese tile game as a rummy-like game played with tiles rather than cards with unique rules and personal strategies one keeps to oneself. The goal is to match your “hand” with one of several different types of “hands” on a National Mah Jongg League card. There are 152 tiles played in one game, each player starting with 13 tiles. The player’s tile combination constantly changes because he or she either picks new tiles or takes those discarded by another player. To win, a player must match up 13 tiles and then pick a 14th tile to complete the “hand.” “Defensive playing,” where you try to figure out what someone else is playing and hold those tiles back, is part of the game. Another interesting aspect is you don’t play with a partner. If you make a wrong decision, it’s your wrong decision. If you win, it’s all because of you! Once you learn the game, it becomes addictive. So if you’re looking for a fun, stimulating, social game, Mah Jongg is just the game for you. The group meets every Wednesday, 9:30 a.m. - noon at South Iredell Senior Center. Come learn Mah Jongg according to the National Mah Jongg League rules, perfect for the beginner or experienced player.

Women’s Workout - It’s true that most women find it difficult to avoid gaining weight as they age. This can be caused by a combination of factors. One of the most important is a lack of physical activity and loss of muscle mass. Muscle burns more calories than fat, so the less muscle you have, the fewer calories you’ll burn. As you age, your metabolism also slows down. So what can you do? Exercise regularly. Exercise boosts your metabolism and burns fat. Strength training increases muscle mass and raises metabolism so you burn more calories when not exercising. Strength training is also essential for women older than 40 because the more muscle you have, the better able you are to prevent injuries from daily tasks and falls. Maintaining a healthy weight as you age requires effort, but it can be done. A Friday 9 a.m. women’s workout class at SISC can help you achieve this goal, along with a walk-away the pounds and chair exercise class that works out with weights, every Tuesday and Thursday at 9:30 a.m. For more information call South Iredell Senior Center, 704-662-3337.
