Les Miles: Kansas QB Jalon Daniels back at practice post-injury - 247Sports

True-freshman quarterback Jalon Daniels had a rough go of things in his latest start for Kansas football. Not only was Daniels sacked nine times — and picked off twice — in a 62-9 loss to the Sooners, he also got run into on the sideline after being forced to leave the game due to an apparent lower left leg injury

The latest from Kansas' head coach? It was actually a bit of good news.

“It appears to me that he will practice in this bye week and prepare to play,” said Les Miles. The guys that have to prepare to play are the guys that protect him. We’re going to have to give them some opportunity at more time this week so that we can be much more accustomed to protection.”

With that comment, Miles was alluding to an offensive line that allowed pressure throughout Saturday's game. In addition to surrendering nine sacks, the Kansas offensive line allowed pressure on both interceptions thrown by the quarterback. The Sooners were credited with six additional quarterback hurries and two additional tackles for loss.

Entering Saturday, Daniels had missed the end of two previous starts (vs. Oklahoma State, vs. Iowa State) due to injury. However, Miles said Daniels' injury in the Oklahoma game was different than his prior nicks.

“We’re going to do a better job protecting him and I feel obligated to that," Miles said. "So, if we can put that offense on a more active mode, and if we can protect that passer, we feel like a lot of the things we want to do and get accomplished would be done.”

Daniels finished the Oklahoma game completing only 11-of-31 passes for 115 yards, plus the aforementioned two picks. Outside of brief outings against Coastal Carolina and Oklahoma State — the latter of which was shortened due to injury — Daniels' marks for completions, yards, completion percentage (35.5), sacks taken and interceptions were all career-worst marks.

Again, though, it does appear Daniels will be able to return to practice, which wasn't necessarily a given as he lay sprawled out on the field following the ninth sack he sustained on Saturday. Miles confirmed Daniels' injury was not dealing with his knee. He added the "good news is that it’s more bruise than it is twist," calling it "really a good thing.”

Previously, Miles has said he would like to see Daniels throw the ball more and avoid the high number of hits he's taken in games. Miles also indicated the Jayhawks may increase their running back use, saying the team will seek out "more looks" for true-freshman running back Daniel Hishaw. Miles said Hishaw played "extremely well" against Oklahoma.

Those tweaks will be on display on Sat., Nov. 21, against Texas.
