Les Miles wants to get Kansas' Pooka Williams more touches - 247Sports
Les Miles was clear during Monday afternoon's press conference. He wants Pooka Williams to get more touches moving forward.
Through two games this season, Williams has tallied 143 yards on 26 attempts (5.5 yards per carry) — good for a mark of 71.5 yards per game. In his first two games last season, Williams rushed the ball 44 times for 220 yards (5.0 yards per carry, 110 yards per game).
“I’d like to get him a few more touches, to be honest with you,” said Miles on Monday. “Keeping [Williams] fresh is also a key piece.”

On the other hand, Williams isn’t too concerned about his own touches, so much as he is the team's overall success.
That was proven in a story Miles told to the media on Monday. Around 2 a.m. on the trip back from Waco, Williams was wide-awake. Instead of sleeping, he was looking over Miles’ shoulder as they re-watched the game — analyzing the good and the bad.
“[Williams] talked about Jalon Daniels, and he talked about the [offensive] line, and he talked about how it was all going to come together,” Miles said. “In my opinion, he’s dead right.”
Simply giving the ball to Williams won’t solve all the problems Kansas’ offense is dealing with. However, there’s evidence to suggest that approach would better the Jayhawks' chances moving forward.
Since Williams' arrival to KU in 2018, the Jayhawks have won six games. In four of those wins, Williams totaled over 100 yards in either his rushing or receiving totals.
Perhaps even more telling is how effective the offense is when he touches the ball more than 20 times a game. Dating back to 2019, KU’s offense averages 27.7 points per game and the team is 2-5 when Williams receives 20-or-more touches. In games where he touches it fewer than 20 times, Kansas is 0-6 and averages 16.3 points per game.
Kansas hasn’t won a game where Williams touched the ball fewer than 20 times since Oct. 27, 2018, against TCU.
“I love when we run the ball,” offensive lineman Chris Hughes said. “I don’t care who’s back there, [Williams], [Velton Gardner], any of those backs. If they’re giving [Williams] the ball, we’re going to block for him and he’s going to get in the end zone.

“If we get [Williams] more touches, I feel like it will open up the game,” Earl Bostick said. “[It'll] just show we can run the ball more and try to get to situations where we can pass easily.”
Following the loss to Baylor, Williams was asked if he was surprised that he wasn’t getting the ball more. He indicated that he wasn't.
“I’m a team player,” Williams answered. “I want everybody on the field to eat.”
His teammates, for the record, appreciate that perspective.
“He understands the big picture,” Andrew Parchment said of Williams' start to the season. “It’s not going to happen overnight. It’s too early to throw in the towel.”
