Big 12 Teleconference: Les Miles says QB battle will continue - 247Sports
(Author's note: Each week following the Big 12 Coaches Teleconference, Phog.net will bring you a roundup of three noteworthy things KU coach Les Miles said. Our latest edition of this feature comes before Kansas football's third game in 2020 — a showdown vs. Oklahoma State.)
Evaluating Jalon Daniels:
The Jayhawks turned to a true-freshman for their Big 12 opener, a 47-14 loss, following a disappointing showing against Coastal Carolina.
In the 2020 season opener (vs. the Chanticleers), senior quarterback Thomas MacVittie left the game in the third quarter after injuring his shoulder, while junior signal caller Miles Kendrick threw for two touchdowns but had one pass intercepted.
Daniels, a true-freshman, flashed some of his potential in the Baylor contest — including when he unleashed a 50-yard deep ball that was marginally overthrown and also showcased the ability to escape pressure in the pocket. But he finished with only 172 passing yards and no touchdowns. Miles said the quarterback competition will continue.
Miles: “[Daniels] threw several balls that were as good of passes that I've seen in a long time. I recognized the ability for him to move his feet and get on the perimeter. I really like him. And understand it's his first game and the opportunity for him to come back with some of those experiences to bolster what will be his self-interpretation as we go through the remainder of the season ...

"No, I didn't say [he'll be the guy moving forward]. But I would be hard-pressed to not let the competition continue considering we've got an injured quarterback and a guy who's really kind of impressing. We enjoy Jalon's performance, figure he'll be getting better. We could play him. It just depends on the week of practice.”
The Oklahoma State QB situation:
Oklahoma State is also figuring out its quarterback situation. The Cowboys started Shane Illingworth, a freshman, last week, after an injury to starter Spencer Sanders in the opener. The Cowboys also turned to backup Ethan Bullock at one point in Game 1.
Miles was asked to break down the QB situation at OSU.

Miles: "I think [Sanders] is talented athletically. I'm told that he's got a little ankle. We wish him the best and hope there'd be an opportunity to compete with him. The backup quarterback [Illingworth, listed 6-5, 220] is big, tall, a guy that can really throw it. I think [Mike] Gundy, has a number of guys there that he can choose from. I don't think being a backup quarterback is significant in terms of him having confidence."
Upsets across college football:
The world of college football has featured upsets across the board, be it multiple Big 12 schools losing to Sun Belt squads in Week 1 or upsets of Oklahoma (vs. K-State) and LSU (vs. Mississippi State) over the weekend.
Miles was asked about that trend.
Miles: “I think there's a lot of things that are capable of happening in college football now. The uniformity of what is college football has been changed a little bit with this virus. I think one day, you feel like your team is in really great shape and you're ready to roll . The next day you're missing a couple guys. In my opinion it's a difficult time to predict [one team] is going to win. Because I don't know that they necessarily know. I think it's not unusual that team would misfire at times.”
