A Trainer Explains the Best Fat-Burning Foods

If you're trying to lose weight, then you've probably been loading up on fat-burning foods such as salmon, green tea, leafy greens, and eggs. And while you may think these foods will help you shed weight faster, the science of how your body burns fat is a little more complicated than that.

Personal trainer Max Weber, NASM, ACE, posted a tongue-in-cheek Instagram photo that revealed the 12 "best" fat-burning foods and included healthy foods such as kiwi, cauliflower, and low-fat cottage cheese alongside other foods that are perceived to be cheats such as diet ice cream, doughnuts, and red wine. So what's the truth about fat-burning foods?

"The truth is that there are no magical, body-detoxing, metabolism-boosting, fat burning foods," Max wrote in his caption. "The way you burn fat is through a calorie deficit, via the Law of Thermodynamics. It's essentially 'calories in' vs. 'calories out,' where you need to be having less calories 'in' than calories 'out' in order to burn fat and lose weight."

He went on to explain that with these rules in mind, you can be flexible with your diet and enjoy any food you want within moderation and as long as it fits within your daily calorie budget. Of course, there are some foods that are more nutritious than others and will help you feel fuller longer, fit within your macros, and keep your blood sugar levels stable, but it's important to understand that no food should be "off-limits."

"The reason the 12 foods in particular are listed above are because they allow for a mostly healthy diet, while allowing you to be flexible with some fun foods that you enjoy," he continued. "Lots of fruits, veggies and lean proteins are crucial for staying full when dieting, and adding variety and flexibility with a sweet treat here and there is important for sustainability."

If you've been restricting your diet and eliminating certain foods, this post proves that you can enjoy everything in moderation and still lose weight. Of course, you should still eat healthful, nutritious food to fuel your body, but you shouldn't beat yourself up if you indulge in your favorite treat every once in a while.
