Ndamukong Suh went from Les Schwab Bowl to Super Bowl title: Oregon high school all-star game through the yea - OregonLive

The annual Les Schwab Bowl -- a high school football all-star game traditionally featuring Oregon’s top graduated seniors -- takes place July 3 at Linfield University in McMinnville.

One new feature this year -- in light of the coronavirus-shortened regular season -- is that underclassmen will be competing in the game for the first time in its 73-year history.

The game will also feature players from southwest Washington schools for the first time. That was going to happen last year had the game pitting the North roster against the South not been canceled.

Here’s a look at each of the previous Les Schwab bowls since 2000, and a look back at some of the biggest names to have played in the event.

2019: SOUTH PREVAILS IN HEATED AFFAIR

Tempers flared several times throughout the 2019 Les Schwab Bowl, which wasn’t decided until Silverton’s Ben Willis sacked Jackson Laurent of Lake Oswego with 10 seconds left to seal the South’s 33-28 victory.

The chippiness even spilled into the postgame handshake line, with trash talk and offers to meet up in the parking lot being exchanged as the teams met at midfield.

2018: GRANT EWELL JR. NAMED GAME MVP

Grant Ewell Jr. of Grant High School was named the game’s most valuable player after making two interceptions, including a second-quarter pick he returned 71 yards for the go-ahead score in the North’s 24-7 win.

Another star for the North, Central Catholic’s Kitan Oladapo, had a breakout season for Oregon State in 2020.

McMinnville quarterback Wyatt Smith was named the George Shaw MVP, and he led the South team to a 10-7 win over the North in the 2017 Les Schwab Tires Bowl presented by Express Employment Professionals on Saturday at Hillsboro Stadium.

Smith went on to excel at Linfield University after high school.

2016: EMERSON FIELD GOAL LIFTS THE SOUTH

Mountain View senior kicker Zach Emerson left his impression on the game in a big way, kicking three field goals, including a game-winning 45-yarder with 1:35 left to give South a 16-14 win.

South quarterback Matt Struck (Crater) was 22 of 37 for 192 yards, while Clackamas’ Wyatt Hutchinson completed 15 of 28 for 261 yards and two touchdowns for North.

Emerson handled kickoff duties for Oregon for a season but left the team after an arrest in 2019.

Yet it was Owamagbe Odighizuwa who brought the most star power to the all-star game. Odighizuwa went on to a great career at UCLA that led to him being drafted in the third round of the 2015 NFL draft by the New York Giants. He’s been out of the league since 2018.
