Local Opens “Les Cactus” In Palm Springs - Los Feliz Ledger
Palm Springs and its retro-chic stays draw those looking for more easygoing surroundings away from traffic, noise and city lights.
Los Feliz’s Matthew Kurtz shares that fondness for the desert enclave and in 2020, opened the 27-room pink-and-green hued, 21-and-older-guests-only “Les Cactus” boutique hotel.
A graduate of USC and then New York University’s Jonathan M. Tisch Center of Hospitality, Kurtz’s career detoured into finance before he realized his dream project of owning and designing a desert getaway, one that was relatively affordable and offers many of those things that Palm Springs visitors seek: poolside lounging, bikes, charm and comfortable beds.
Visitors can’t miss Les Cactus and its tropical pink exterior and 30-foot tall cactus at the front entrance. The property was formerly the clothing optional Terra Cotta resort. It was originally built in the 1930s and retains some vintage details including the courtyard layout and vaulted ceilings throughout.
Rooms surround the courtyard and desert modern landscaping, dotted with cactus, palo verde and citrus trees. A row of hammocks and green-plus-pink custom lounge chairs beckon and are carefully spread out to insure social distancing. There are colorful umbrellas for shade, tables and chairs for eating outdoors and a small roof lounge for views and photos.
Kurtz studied both hospitality and real estate finding hotels are the exact combination of both pursuits. He spent time behind the front desk at West Hollywood’s Chateau Marmont and in New York working at Bond Street Hospitality before returning to his native Los Angeles.
“I’ve always been drawn to boutique hotels because each one is unique,” he said. “Unlike a chain hotel, you can make it whatever you like, with the hopes of creating amazing experiences for guests.”
His intention was to create a boutique hotel with an affordable price, one that delivered great design at a great price. And because travellers these days are familiar with Airbnb or VRBO overnight stays, Kurtz finds that many guests can handle some self-sufficiency and appreciate a lower rate.
Although there’s a front desk and staff on hand, there’s no full service restaurant or concierge. Continental breakfast is served in cute take-away picnic basket and guests often order lunch and dinner and dine in.
“We made it feel like a home,” Kurtz said.
The lobby is also comfortably redone and bright—filled with art books and seating areas, a welcoming place to hang out although the pool and hot tub are just outside. Rooms are compact with original art and mid-century modern adjacent furniture.
Palm Springs is a quick getaway, Kurtz said. “People enjoy the relaxed, unique feeling of Les Cactus and its non-traditional aspects.”
The surrounding up-and-coming Warm Sands neighborhood is very walkable and bikeable with the antique and vintage shops nearby and dozens of local eateries.
“Our mantra is fun, funky and affordable,” Kurtz said.
