Les Miles comments on end of 2020 Kansas football season - 247Sports

Kansas football's 2020 season has come to an end — albeit one week earlier than expected. On Thursday, the Big 12 announced that the Jayhawks' game against Texas had been "canceled due to UT's shutdown of football operations."

According to the Big 12's release, the game will be declared as a no contest. It will not be rescheduled. Of course, the contest was previously set as the Jayhawks' 2020 finale after its originally scheduled date was postponed.

“I am very disappointed our team won’t get another chance to compete this season, but unfortunately that is out of our control,” said Kansas coach Les Miles through an athletics release. “Our team played very hard last week on the road, and I know they were eager to get back on the field to face a very good Texas team this weekend."

As Miles mentioned, the Jayhawks nearly sprung an upset at Texas Tech last Saturday. In that game, the Red Raiders jumped out to a 10-0 lead, but the Jayhawks added a late-first-half field goal and later tied the game at 13 with a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Tech scored a go-ahead field goal (16-13), but the Jayhawks had two further opportunities to drive down the field and either tie the game or win. They turned the ball over on downs both times.

With the loss, the Jayhawks dropped to 0-9 on the season and 0-8 in Big 12 play. The Tech game was the closest result for the team, as Kansas dropped every other Big 12 contest by at least 21 points.

The Jayhawks also played within 15 points of Coastal Carolina in their season-opener. The Chanticleers have since cruised to a 10-0 record, most recently defeating a top-25 BYU squad, 22-17.

"With our season complete, I would be remiss not to recognize our student-athletes and staff for diligently following the medical guidelines set for them this year," Miles continued in the athletics release. "I am very proud of their efforts and proud to be the head coach of this football team. Rock Chalk, Jayhawk."

All eyes will now look toward signing day, with the Jayhawks set, as things stand right now, to bring in a class of 20 names, plus any late additions. Remaining on the board for the Jayhawks are offensive linemen De'Kedrick Sterns (previously reopened his recruitment after committing to Kansas) and Marcus Mbow (previously committed to Arizona State), both of whom hope to announce in the early period.

The Jayhawks' top-ranked recruit is four-star running back Devin Neal. Neal is the No. 213-ranked player per the Top247 and would be the highest-ranked signee in program history (Top247) if indeed he chooses to follow through with his verbal commitment.
