Les Miles speaks on firing Luke Meadows, promoting new OL coach - 247Sports

On Friday, Kansas football announced that head coach Les Miles was shaking up his staff. Miles fired O-line coach Luke Meadows, promoting John Morookian to fill that role.
The news came off the heels of KU Athletics announcing the postponement of an upcoming game against Texas due to dwindling roster numbers at one position — because of COVID-19, contact tracing and injury. So then, Miles' first full opportunity to address the move came on Monday at his weekly press availability.
“I’m going to go beyond the message that I delivered on Friday,” said Miles. “We just felt like there was an opportunity to promote John Morookian and find exactly what his view of line play is. I like his background. I like who he is. As I said, we decided to go in a different direction and turn our attention to Morookian and see if we can help him.”
The decision, again, was announced Friday, but Miles indicated it may have taken place even earlier. He was not particularly forthcoming on the matter but did field one question about a timeline from media.

“We made it before [Friday] I’m sure,” said Miles “It certainly was a tough decision to make, but we wanted our team to have the opportunity to improve and get better. It just felt like going in another direction was the thing to do.
Even though Miles did not get into the specifics of why Meadows was fired, there's plenty of evidence to point at with the numbers. Of the teams that have played at least one game this season, Kansas ranks 126th in the country in sacks allowed per game with 5.43. On the season, Kansas has allowed 38 sacks in seven games.
For a frame of reference, that’s dead last in the country. Only two other teams have given up more than five sacks per game on average. Neither have played more than four games.
Morookian, on the other hand, joined the staff back in March as an offensive senior analyst. With Morookian’s promotion this week, Miles did clarify that he was on an interim basis and not installed as the permanent offensive line coach.

Big-picture, Miles said he (Miles) will continue to be equally involved with the offensive line, noting he's never really stepped away from that group. Miles is looking forward to interacting with Morookian on a regular basis, he said.
“It’s an understanding that he’ll have some [time] to get this done,” added Miles. “This will be, in my opinion, a nice format for he and I to describe and discuss football. I think he’s a step forward. He’s going to give us some different experiences that he’s had and I look forward to working alongside him for a little bit.”
