Les Miles: Marcus Harris 'scratching the surface' of potential - 247Sports
There are two players defensive end Marcus Harris likes to mold his game after. But they aren’t just any players. They’re former first-round NFL Draft selections.
On Monday, Harris — a redshirt freshman — said he tries to emulate the play of 2019 first round pick Ed Oliver and 2020 first round pick Derrick Brown. Brown, who was drafted seventh overall by the Carolina Panthers, played college football at Auburn — less than an hour from where Harris grew up in Montgomery, Ala.
Harris, obviously, doesn’t have the national recognition of those names, but it’s clear the bar is being set high for the redshirt-freshman. Les Miles reiterated that in Monday afternoon’s weekly press conference.
“I think he’s just now scratching the surface of his abilities,” Miles said. “He’s quick, he’s strong, fast, cat-like. [He] made just some great plays in that [West Virginia] game.”

Harris, who has only played in six collegiate games, didn’t disagree with what his coach had to say about him.
“I appreciate coach Miles for his compliments and I agree with the statement,” Harris said.
In the 38-17 loss to West Virginia, Harris tallied six total tackles and tied for a team-high with three TFLs. Coming into that game, Harris had recorded just three tackles on the season.
However, even with a slow start, Harris’ name was frequently mentioned by defensive personnel each week for the improvement he was showing.
“I'd seen that boy in the backfield a lot of times,” Elijah Jones said. “He had a couple tackles for a loss and he’s a young player that’s out there working hard.”
The Jayhawks have a ways to go in terms of constructing a stout defense. But the confidence is there, according to Harris.
“I feel like we’re a really good defense,” Harris said. “I know everybody sees that. We’re a young group and I know we’re going to catch our rhythm. When we catch our rhythm, I think we’re going to be hard to stop.”
With many first and second year players receiving meaningful snaps, it’s beneficial that the veterans on the defense are offering guidance. The mentoring isn’t specific to the position group either. Harris says he’s learned a lot from the linebackers this season.

“[The linebackers] always congratulate us on filling up the holes for them,” Harris said. “They tell us what they see and we tell them what we see. So, we work together."
Dru Prox, one of the experienced linebackers Harris mentioned, spoke highly of the redshirt freshman in the aftermath of the West Virginia game. Prox alluded to Harris’ performance in practice as a massive contributor to his showing on Saturday.
“I was not surprised in the slightest that he was getting those amount of TFLs,” Prox said. “He worked for it and you get what you work for. I think he did a great job.”
Harris has plenty of room to grow within Kansas’ system. But if Miles' statement is correct, KU’s defensive front could have a special player the rest of the conference doesn’t know of yet.
