Kansas football: What would a winless season mean for Les Miles? - Through the Phog
Falling into a steep decline, the Jayhawks have struggled to gain any traction this season. This raises eyebrows to the legitimacy of where Les Miles sees this heading in the future.
Two years ago, the University of Kansas introduced 2007 National Championship head coach Les Miles to the Jayhawks, who’ve been at the bottom of the conference and rebuilding since the departure of former head coach Mark Mangino in 2009. Kansas football had been trending downward further with each of the four previous coaches in charge and the move by A.D. Jeff Long was one that many fans saw as a sign of long-awaited relief for the Jayhawks.
Miles inherited a team with some of the least impressive numbers of any FBS program at the time. At the present day, nearly nothing has changed statistics wise. Obviously, these rebuilds don’t happen overnight, that’s not my argument here.
However, I think almost any Kansas football fan should be asking themselves, what’s the angle here? This COVID-19 season was said to level the playing field a little bit in the Big 12, and for most teams, that remains true. Although for Kansas, they have been unable to take away any advantage from the pandemic.
Despite what was perceived to be a productive offseason, the Jayhawks have come out flat in their first three appearances. While two matchups were with difficult Big 12 opponents, Kansas has allowed 94 total points in these games.
Recruiting has obviously hurt Kansas this year, but it would be a sin to not shed some light on the injuries Kansas has seen out of the gate. While these injuries hurt the Jayhawks last weekend, head coach Les Miles informed us at Hawk Talk that the injured starters are set to return to the lineup in Morgantown on October 17th.
Despite the positive information revealed at the weekly radio show, head coach Les Miles tested positive for coronavirus on Thursday which creates even more uncertainty for fans about next week’s matchup. The news broke on Twitter Thursday afternoon:
Kansas football head coach Les Miles has tested positive for COVID-19.

Miles’ diagnosis will ultimately impact the Jayhawks’ decision regarding who will lead Kansas next week but the coaching staff should be able to handle the load. However, it will without a doubt pose another challenge for Kansas going forward.
Staying healthy is a must for any team this year, now more than ever when fighting against a pandemic. If the Jayhawks offense can’t keep off the bench, there won’t be any showings of consistency going further into this season.
As of right now, Kansas doesn’t seem to be putting up any potential to write up a win on their schedule this year. This could put head coach Les Miles in some rough water by the end of the year, which isn’t something I’d wanna see. I think Kansas will need to see another recruiting class or two before we can actively begin discussions of re-organizing our coaching staff.
