Big 12 Teleconference: Three things Les Miles said this week - 247Sports
(Author's note: Each week following the Big 12 Coaches Teleconference, Phog.net will bring you a roundup of three noteworthy things KU coach Les Miles said. Our latest edition of this feature comes following Kansas football's 47-7 loss to Oklahoma State.)
The status of Pooka Williams:
Junior Kansas running back Pooka Williams — a two-time All-Big 12 honoree and 1,000-yard rusher from each of his first two college seasons — has dealt with an apparent lower-leg injury that has hindered his play to start the year.
Through three games, Williams has rushed for only 175 yards on 40 attempts (career-low 4.4 YPC) — totaling two touchdowns. He also has three receptions for 24 yards. Miles was asked if indeed Williams, who did not play late against Oklahoma State, left the game because he had been injured.
(Williams also left the game against Coastal Carolina due to injury.)
Miles: “I believe he did [get hurt again]. The good news is it's a nick and it's not something — we figure we'll have him back here after the bye week. ...

"Yeah, you don't want to get your player that can make some game-deciding moves — you want to keep him fresh and not-necessarily allow him to get worn down. Leaving the game late, two games, certainly we have to get him healthy and keep him healthy.”
Learning how to win:
One thing the Jayhawks are currently trying to work through is developing a winning culture. Miles has expressed a team goal of competing for championships, but the Jayhawks are still in the building blocks of setting up the roster and bringing the right players into the program.
Miles was asked about the philosophy of learning to win on Saturday — and specifically what it means.

Miles: "It's expectations jointly by the whole team and then actions that would predict future success. So, working out, making sure that you're wearing your mask, the leadership that you would expect from veterans — that's what it meant to me. ...
"You're constantly looking for examples that you can be positive about. In other words, you need to show them what it is they're doing well, so they can then focus on keeping that and stepping toward another area of improvement."
Reflecting on the Oklahoma State game:
The Big 12 has one undefeated team remaining, and that is Oklahoma State (3-0 on the year, 2-0 in conference). After playing against the Cowboys, Miles was asked to break down what he saw from the other side on Saturday.
Miles: “They're pretty good. Their talent, certainly seems like they've got a nice running back, good quarterbacks. And their stature, their height is very good. And I think Mike [Gundy]'s doing a good job. ... I think they will be a team that could easily play for the conference. A lot of time between now and then, but I think he'd give them a chance to play for the championship.”
