Les Miles, KU players address O-line heading into Big 12 play - 247Sports

Ask a running back and then a wide receiver about the Kansas football offensive line from Game 1. You'll come up with different answers.

There's a reason for such a thing. The Jayhawks' ground game was effective in Week 1, posting 178 yards on 38 carries, good for a mark of 4.7 yards per rush. And that includes the negative yard totals that came from sacks.

The passing game? The Jayhawks threw for just 189 yards (5.4 yards per attempt) while totaling two touchdowns to two interceptions. The signal callers were often under duress, as was expected to an extent following the departure of the team's starting left and right tackles.

So then, a wide receiver's opinion?

"I feel like they had some rough time," Takulve Williams said of the O-line. "But I also see some bright spots from the O-line. I know for a fact they feel like they can be better just because they're hard on [them]selves. They want to be the best."

He continued.

“I don’t really say much off the first game because it doesn’t really show much," Williams added. "I feel like you have to let them get a rhythm for themselves and find themselves. … I feel like they’re all right. They’re OK."

A running back?

"They did an awesome job overall," said Velton Gardner, who ran for a 61-yard touchdown in the KU opener. "Probably missed a few assignments, but overall, as a whole, it was a great job well done."

Again, considering the details of KU's 38-23 loss to Coastal Carolina, that assessment makes sense.

Of course, another man whose opinion of the offensive line carries some weight is Les Miles, who is in his second year as KU coach. Miles was asked to assess the play of the O-line unit and some of its struggles at his weekly availability.

"We got behind on the chains, in the game," Miles said. "We needed time. The opponent knew we were throwing the football and we were. And it became a little bit more difficult to protect. And that protection is not only the offensive line. It’s as a team. It could be that back that needs to step up and take on a guy."

That showed itself on one play — featured in Phog.net's weekly film room — when Earl Bostick (right tackle) and Pooka Williams (running back) had a miscommunication that led to a defender getting a free run at Kansas quarterback Thomas MacVittie

Bostick in particular struggled at times in his 2020 opener as KU's starting right tackle. Miles was asked to assess his performance.

“I think Earl is going to be a very good pass protector," Miles said. "I think he needs to learn to hunker down and really come off the football at times. But I think he’ll develop and turn into being a very, very capable lineman. … I think Earl Bostick will eventually be a very fine player.”

Another lineman who, at times, had trouble with the Coastal Carolina pass rush was Jacobi Lott, who actually left the field at one point with an apparent injury.

Miles did not give an extended injury update on Lott outside of saying he thinks Lott "will see the field" against Baylor.

The Jayhawks will take all the reinforcements they can get following a Week 1 outing in which they allowed 12 Coastal Carolina tackles for loss, as well as three sacks.

Kickoff is slated for 6:30 p.m. CT from Waco.
