Les Miles: Kansas football learning how to start fast - 247Sports

Those who have followed the Kansas football program should be plenty familiar with a Jayhawk coach speaking on the following topic: starting fast.
David Beaty, the Jayhawks' former coach, regularly spoke to the importance of starting fast and even implemented practice routines in hopes of doing so. Now it's Les Miles who has mentioned the same thing following a game in which his team fell by 15, 38-23, but never had much of a shot because of a start that was anything but fast.
Miles addressed that very topic — the 28-0 first-half KU deficit vs. Coastal Carolina — on his weekly Hawk Talk show.
"I think it's an innocent team, a team that doesn't understand how to start fast," Miles said. "I did a poor job, obviously, getting them to do that. They had five drives and three of those drives ended in a turnover. And when you are down 14, going to be 21-0, I mean, you started slow. You didn't start fast; you started slow."

As Miles mentioned, the Jayhawks struggled with turnovers against the Chanticleers. The team threw two interceptions — one by Thomas MacVittie (batted up by a wideout) and one by Miles Kendrick (batted up by a defensive lineman) — and had one fumble, all before the two-minute mark in the second quarter.
KU also missed a field goal in the second quarter.
"We talk about those things," Miles said. "We took the ball in the first possession. We took the ball. We were looking to capitalize on some early momentum and being in that stadium, because we enjoy being in The Booth. It didn't turn the way we wanted it to turn out. When you give three turnovers away, I don't care who you are. You could be playing the Dallas Cowboys and it would have looked very similar."
Now, one thing that did affect the Jayhawks' offense was a did-not-dress list that included two starters in Stephon Robinson and Jack Luavasa. Had Robinson in particular been in the game, he could have been involved on two of the plays that resulted in turnovers — a ball batted in the air by freshman wideout Lawrence Arnold and a fumble recorded by junior wideout Takulve Williams. Such was noted by Voice of the Jayhawks Brian Hanni on the Hawk Talk episode.
Miles indicated both players (Robinson and Luavasa) would likely be back with the team for the next contest — Sept. 26 at Baylor.

"We're getting healthy," Miles said.
Of course, to pin the decisive loss on injury wouldn't tell the whole story — and Miles didn't do that either.
However, he also continued to set high expectations for his squad even in the midst of a season that got off to a bumpy start.
"We're going to be a good football team," Miles said. "We have recruited well. This is a high-school dominated team. So here we come. I'm just telling you this is a team that is going to play extremely hard."
