Les Miles grateful Pooka Williams given extra week to recover - 247Sports

Pooka Williams received only 12 carries on Saturday, something that became a topic of discussion of sorts from fans on social media.

Of course, while some were confused by Williams only receiving 12 carries, KU coach Les Miles clarified after the game that Williams was nicked up, a phrase Miles uses often in place of revealing any injury information.

"Pooka has got a nick," Miles said. "I suspect he'll be back relatively quickly."

On Wednesday, Miles was interviewed on his weekly Hawk Talk show. A fan submitted a question requesting an update on Williams. (Miles will not speak to media again until Monday.)

"I think Pooka still has a lot of Pooka Magic in his business," Miles said on the show. "I saw him in the building [Wednesday], and really running around was exactly what he was doing. We've got to settle him down and not let him be too busy."

Voice of the Jayhawks Brian Hanni followed up on the fan's inquiry: Would Williams be good to play if the Jayhawks took the field this Saturday?

"Honestly I think he probably would've," Miles said. "I'm glad we don't have to ask that question, though."

In his 2020 debut — a 38-23 loss to Coastal Carolina — Williams rushed for 67 yards on 12 carries, good for a mark of 5.6 yards per attempt. Even hampered by injury, Williams still forced eight missed tackles on his 12 carries, a mark good enough for first in the nation according to Pro Football Focus.

In addition to Williams, sophomore running back Velton Gardner carried the ball 11 times for 81 yards and a touchdown. True-freshman Daniel Hishaw also totaled two carries for two yards, including a gain of one on a fourth-down conversion that required a second effort from the young rusher.

The majority of the Jayhawks' rushing yards — after the running backs — came from quarterback Thomas MacVittie, who totaled 37 yards on six carries, picking up three first downs on the ground.

"I want you to know, Pooka was in a position where he was a little nicked, not necessarily [able] to return," Miles said. "And we needed somebody to step in and make a big-time play and [Gardner's 61-yard touchdown] was a big-time play. Velton Gardner is strong and physical and has speed. And the good news is, he's still very young. But the best news may also be that Pooka's not that far away from the line of scrimmage."

So then, if Miles is saying Williams is "not that far away from the line of scrimmage," one could infer that is Miles' way of saying the junior running back is nearing a return.

The next game? Sept. 26 in Waco against the Baylor Bears.
