Hawk Talk roundup: Les Miles says KU has 0 positive COVID tests - 247Sports
If the game between Kansas football and Baylor is canceled this weekend, it won't be the fault of the Jayhawks — at least according to an update Les Miles gave on Wednesday.
Speaking on his weekly Hawk Talk show, the KU coach noted the Jayhawks had 0 positive coronavirus tests — presumably in the latest round of testing. Specifically, someone at the event in person informed the broadcast crew of Miles and voice of the Jayhawks Brian Hanni that the Jayhawks "have got zero," to which Miles clarified: "That was the number of positive tests."
Such has not been the case in Waco, as the Baylor Bears have had multiple contests canceled, including a game two weeks ago against Louisiana Tech and a makeup game last week against Houston. In particular, the Houston contest was reportedly called off due to contact tracing, which wiped out the numbers on the offensive line for the Bears.
The Jayhawks did play out their season opener — a 38-23 loss to Coastal Carolina — missing only two starters. The reason for those absences was not disclosed. However, the Jayhawks will have to do some guesswork when it comes to their first Big 12 game, as there is no film on a Baylor Bears team that lost plenty of production from its defense, as well as its previous head coach in Matt Rhule during the offseason.
"The good news is I was at LSU with [new Baylor coach] Dave Aranda and know at least some base quality characteristics of his defense," Miles said. "[D-coordinator] Ron Roberts is also from ULL and he really works with Dave Aranda, and so we're looking for a style of defense that we're accustomed to and that we'll play and play well."
He continued.
"Dave Aranda is a very quality person," Miles added. "Family guy, and one of the most technically-competent defensive coordinators in the business."
Miles should also have familiarity with Baylor offensive coordinator Larry Fedora, given Miles' son, Manny Miles, played three seasons of quarterback at UNC when Fedora was the coach.
Quarterback use:
One other question Miles fielded — from a fan submission — was on the quarterbacks. The Jayhawks rotated quarterbacks in the season opener, using Thomas MacVittie and Miles Kendrick until the waning moments of the game.
Jalon Daniels took over on the last drive, and some fans have wondered if the freshman might get a shot given the year won't count against playing eligibility for anyone due to an NCAA waiver.
Miles didn't give specifics on who will start or what the pecking order will be. But he did say he's looking to see leadership from the QB spot, as well as the ability to make the right play.
"I think you'll like our quarterbacks," Miles said. "I think it's likely that more than one will play. I think you'll like them. I think you'll recognize leadership, ability to throw it, ability to run it."
