Finebaum says he's 'at a loss to explain Les Miles' - 247Sports

Just five years ago, Les Miles was taking the LSU Tigers to a nine-win season and a bowl victory. Just a few years prior to that, he was winning and competing for National Championships with the Tigers. That could be something that is tough to believe today if you didn’t follow Miles’ career in Baton Rouge.
Today, Miles sits in his second year at the University of Kansas, fresh off of a Week 1 loss to Coastal Carolina and has a record of 3-10 with the Jayhawks. Things aren’t good for Miles in Lawrence and don’t necessarily look to be getting much better this year.
ESPN Radio host Paul Finebaum has no answer for Miles’ struggles at KU. Just one day after questioning Miles’ credibility, Finebaum went on Keyshawn, JWill and Zubin on ESPN Radio and had no way to explain the struggles Miles has been having.
“Les Miles, remember him? He was at LSU and won a National Championship, primarily with Nick Saban's talent, I might add,” Finebaum said. “He opened last season against Coastal Carolina and lost. He opened this season against Coastal Carolina and lost. I mean, usually, when you lose to a team in a game a year ago, you figure out a way to maybe beat them in the revenge game.
“In 13 games he's lost twice to the same school. And while Coastal Carolina — I think they won the National Championship in baseball a couple years ago, they have a really good athletic department — that should not be a fair fight between Coastal and Kansas. I’m at a loss to explain Les Miles.”
In his first nine years at LSU, Miles failed to win 10 or more games just twice. He won the 2007 BCS Championship and then played for, but lost, the 2011 BCS Championship. But after those first nine years, things went downhill, for LSU’s standards. The Tigers won eight games in 2014, nine in 2015 and then started 2-2 in 2016 before the school fired Miles.
Miles, 66, could have retired after his tenure at LSU. But instead, after two seasons out of the game, Miles decided to take over a program that had won just nine games over five years. But Finebaum has a simple answer as to why Miles took the job with the Jayhawks.
“When you're unemployed and nobody is calling you on the phone, you will take a job anywhere,” Finebaum said. “And that's where Les miles was. I say this with — I like Les Miles, but Les Miles was not exactly a candidate for Monday Night Football. I mean, he's not that funny, he's not that personable. Yeah, he got that job and he took it. It pays good money and he had no other options. I mean none.”
