KU's Les Miles gives statement on police shooting of Jacob Blake - 247Sports
On a day that will likely be remembered for protests taking place in the NBA regarding the police shooting of Jacob Blake, KU football coach Les Miles also delivered a statement on the same matter.
Blake, a 29-year-old Black man, was shot in the back multiple times by police earlier this week. In a video that has gone viral across the internet, a police officer is seen grabbing Blake's shirt from behind as he attempts to enter into a car. There were several officers on the scene and what appears to be seven gunshots are heard being fired by police into Blake's back.
At least two of the officers involved in the incident were placed on administrative leave, according to a report from CBS News. The Blake family's lawyer also told CBS News that three of Blake's children, ages 3, 5 and 8, were in the car at the time of the shooting.
Miles addressed the shooting in the opening statement of his press conference on Wednesday.
“I see that our country is still shaken by bad decisions — being shot in front of your kids, being shot multiple times," said Miles. "Racial inequities — the cultural sensitivity is just not there for these policemen that come up. We have to look back. We have to change. There’s things that must be done.”
The shooting of Blake has sparked outrage across the country, as well as protests, similar to the police killing of George Floyd back in May. Floyd, an unarmed Black man was handcuffed and pined to the ground by a police officer, who pressed his knee on Floyd's neck for nearly nine minutes.
At the time of Floyd's death, Miles released a statement:
"As a football coach, I have had the good fortune of bringing young men together from different backgrounds to achieve a common goal – becoming a team.
"I have struggled to express the feelings and emotions with the events that have occurred over the past several days. My deepest condolences to the Floyd family. I am a father, and also a coach to many players both past and present who have enriched my life, and I am thankful for that.
"I’ve had players from around the country with a variety of backgrounds and have truly enjoyed working with and serving those quality young men. I encourage these men to go be leaders and make a positive impact in the world.
"My heart hurts as I reflect on the racism that still exists in this country and the civil unrest we currently find ourselves in. Regardless of race and color we cannot keep turning a blind eye to those that need our support through words and actions now more than ever.
"God Bless."
