Cereal Diet For Weight Loss: Does It Work? - Medical Daily

Cereal diet promises to help shed some weight through a simple and easy-to-follow routine. Unlike other plans that require a number of adjustments, this diet only encourages people to replace breakfast and lunch with cereal and milk.

The cereal diet became popular after the “Special K Challenge.” The manufacturer already stopped promoting the challenge but many people continued to follow and recommend eating cereal and milk daily for weight loss.

Followers of the diet said it provides good amounts of fiber and whole grains and lower fat and calories. The cereal diet also encourages eating fruits, vegetables and whole grains for dinner.

Eating cereal at breakfast and lunch everyday may limit your calorie intake to 1,200 to 1,500 per day. Many people said low levels of calories helped them lose weight after following the cereal diet for five days to two weeks.

In one study, researchers found that the adults who joined the Special K Challenge for two weeks lost nearly 600 calories per day and lost weight and fat mass. However, experts questioned the findings since the study was sponsored by the manufacturer Kellogg’s.

Cereal Diet Benefits

A review of previous studies involving one million people found that diets high in whole grains can promote better overall health. Researchers said consumption of at least 28 grams of whole grains per day could reduce risk of death by 9 percent from any cause, Healthline reported

The fiber in cereals also support healthy digestion and plays a key role in weight management.

Problems With Cereal Diet

Despite having health benefits, the cereal diet can also harm the body. Many cereal products contain high amounts of sugar, which could trigger a number of health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

Restricting calories, protein and healthy fats can also affect the body’s defense against diseases.

Significantly decreasing your calories alone can cut the levels of the hormone leptin in the body, which could lead to increased hunger and food cravings.

Significantly low calorie intake can also cause lower metabolic rate. It could make weight loss more difficult since the body burns food slower.
