Snacking: Here's Why It's Bad News For Your Blood Sugar & Hormones

Think of it this way: If our bodies were cars, they would have two gas tanks. One is small and filled with carbs and used up within a few miles, and the other is large and provides us with slow, steady fuel for hundred of miles. When we snack we're only accessing that smaller tank, and we have to stop for gas constantly; all the while we have this other fuel tank right there just waiting to be used. Doesn't seem very logical, does it?

So what are the benefits of metabolic flexibility? According to experts, sticking to three meals a day (or even just two!) can leave us with more energy, less hunger, more weight loss, and clearer thinking. JJ Virgin, fitness expert and instructor of the mbg class The Ultimate Guide to Boosting Metabolism explained that "Every time you put something in your mouth, your insulin levels spike. That sets off a cascade of hunger and stress hormones. Among the harmful effects, it signals your body to store unwanted fat, especially around your waist." In other words, snacking is bad news for your waistline.

But isn't it calories that matter most when it comes to weight gain? And won't grazing throughout the day keep you from overeating? According to recent science, it's more complicated than that. "Snacking constantly or 'grazing' is a bad idea for weight loss. Every time we eat, we give our bodies the instructions to store food energy as body fat. So doing this six to eight times per day is worse for weight loss than doing it two to three times per day," said Dr. Jason Fung, fasting expert and best-selling author.
